Thought of the Day - 8/8/09

Such a Powerful Offering

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” - Dr. Leonardo Buscaglia

In my opinion, one of the greatest gifts, gift – something given to another voluntarily, without charge, we can give someone is a compliment. The simple definition of the compliment is - an expression of praise, congratulation or encouragement.

I do consider compliments a great gift. They are a gift to give and a great gift to receive. Remember, every word has power. We also need to remember that as a gift, a compliment is something that someone is “giving you”. That means the giver has thought about you, formulated the words of the compliment and delivered the compliment to you. They are giving a piece of themselves. Compliments are a powerful offering.

Compliments have the power to change a person’s day. When you change someone’s day, you have changed the world a little for the better. Think about that last time that you gave someone a compliment and they responded, “you made my day.” Well! You really did make their day. In my little world, there is one response to a compliment: thank you.

All too often I see people respond to compliments with a quip, snide remark, or totally minimize and dismiss the compliment. See if some of these sound familiar.

Compliment Giver - “I’ve missed you…”
Receiver Response– “You just saw me last week.”
Compliment Giver’s Interpretation – “I can take it or leave it if I see you…it's not that big a deal to me”

Compliment Giver – “You look great…”
Receiver Response – “Thank you…you must need glasses”
Compliment Giver’s Interpretation – “Boy! Did I just waste a set of words…guess my words are meaningless and useless.”

Compliment Giver – “You did a great job on that project…”
Receiver Response – “That’s what they pay me to do…that’s my job...”
Compliment Giver’s Interpretation – “Sorry I bothered you for noticing and acknowledging your contribution.”

There is another type of compliment that can send the original intent south in a matter of a few words. It’s the dreaded back-handed compliment. This one is a little more complicated. Guys are notorious for this one.

Compliment Giver Part One – “You look great in that dress.”
Receiver Response – “Thank you”
Compliment Giver Part Two – “Did you lose weight?”
Receiver Interpretation – “You think I’m fat….”
Compliment Giver’s Interpretation – “What did I do wrong…”

NoteMore words do not mean better compliments guys. Just stop at “you look great in that dress…”

Compliments are indeed a gift. Someone is giving you a piece of themselves in the way of their words, thoughts, and energy. Be gracious and thankful that someone cares enough for you to give you the gift of a compliment. We all have the ability to give the gift of a compliment. Be generous with your gifts and watch the world change before you very eyes.
