Thought of the Day 8/17/09

“Teach as well as you can.”

“There is one thing about destiny. You can’t get there by yourself.” – Ron Carpenter

Today’s TOD is compliments of my friend in California, Sue Stenberg. Thanks.

An article I read today in the Los Angeles Times resonated with me. It involved Roger Boesche – one of Obama’s politics professors 25+ years ago at Los Angeles College (now Occidental College). Obama has often cited Boesche as one of his most influential teachers. Boesche and his family were recently invited to the White House to meet with Obama.

After Boesche returned to LA, reporters asked him if he’d seen the makings of a president in Obama – nearly 30 years ago. Boesche said that he could not claim that he had. He said something that applies to professors, teachers, parents and friends: “realize that in any class, you could have a child, a young man or woman, who could do incredibly great things in the world. So teach as well as you can.”

For me, I’ve long realized that people will live up to or down to the expectations placed upon them. You can and will achieve more if you expect to achieve more. Likewise when you’re teaching or managing: the achievements and success of those that you are teaching or managing will be greater if the expectations you place upon them are higher – and if you strive to do your best in managing or teaching. Boesche really said it best: “teach as well as you can”.

Action Item – What can you teach someone today?
