For the Health of It!

Yes, the title is a play on words in a good way. It’s about mental health and the benefits of writing.  Writing is healthy.  It connects what you feel in your heart to the logic in your head.  When you see it on paper, your feelings are validated.  Writing completes the heart and head connection.

Originally, my writing was mainly journaling; however, since 2006, I’ve written around 1,100 pages, published two books, and am looking at possibly putting out a third. For me, writing is therapy.  It keeps me engaged in life, enhances my mental health, keeps me thinking, keeps my heart open, and helps me maintain awareness. Below, are four things I’ve learned about writing over the last 14 years.

  • Write from the heart.  You can edit later.
  • Everything I write is not about me.  I do not always know who it is for, and then there are other times I know exactly who needs the words.
  • I write about what I experience, what speaks to me, and what I am feeling.  If it does not feel right, I skip writing about if for now.  If it is something really bugging me but just not ready for the press, I write it and save it for later or delete it.
  • Your words have power. Choose them wisely.
