Who, What, & When

I heard the following comment at the tail end of an interview, “One of the best lessons I’ve learned in life is figuring out who to listen to and when.”  It is the simple concept of quality over quantity.  With all the daily chatter and information overflow, the listening filters of who, what, and when are more important than ever.  I am a far better listener than I was in the past, but I still work at getting better at it.

We all have inherent filters if we choose to listen to our intuition.  Think about how certain people and conversations make you feel.  I know if I am around a drama queen or professional pessimist, I feel uncomfortable and find myself looking for a plan to escape.  I know when I am around a genuine and caring person, I can talk with them for hours.  Sensing the energy behind words is one of our best filters.

As you go through your day, pay close attention to how you feel during conversations.  The more attention you pay, the better your filters become at determining who, what, and when to listen.
